Tarek Alsaleh wins the Inspired Leadership Award 2018

A young, German-Syrian business leader, Tarek Alsaleh, founder of ‘Capoiera4Refugees’ which runs sport, music and play projects in prisons, with refugees and in safe houses for vulnerable women and girls, has won the Inspired Leadership Award 2018. The award was presented to Tarek by Nthabiseng Legoete, ILA 2017 winner.

Each year, the Inspired Leadership Award is presented at an event called The Performance Theatre, to an emerging leader who has shown potential to achieve positive change on a global scale. The committee were impressed by the impact and outreach of Tarek’s unusual work – using a Brazilian martial art form that combines sport and play to heal victims of injustice and conflict.

This year’s stellar list of nominees includes Dale Nirvani Pfeifer, Founder and CEO, Goodworld; Isaac Nyangolo, Co-Founder and CEO, Litemore Limited; Joanna Bichsel, CEO and Co-founder, Kasha; Nazma Akter, President, Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation – Bangladesh; and Victor Ochen, Founder and Executive Director for African Youth Initiative Network.

Jeremy Hillman, director of corporate communications at the World Bank and chairman of the Inspired Leadership Award Committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tarek and our other nominees to The Performance Theatre. Their achievements and their stories inspire us all to reach higher and be bolder and their values reflect and enrich our Performance Theatre Community.”

The Performance Theatre’s founder, Osvald Bjelland, said: “The Performance Theatre’s aim is to inspire the leadership to reinvent growth. It is therefore fantastic to be able to support emerging leaders like Tarek who demonstrate that it is possible to advance opportunities that are of commercial value but also serve a real human need.”

On receiving the award, Tarek said, “The hard bit is to pause and enjoy the moment. But I definitely then want to continue working hard to increase the outreach of our work.”

The Performance Theatre brings together a select group of CEOs and C-level executives with the world’s best and brightest, thinkers, influencers and doers. The attendees this year include Felipe Calderón, Former President, Mexico, Chair and President, Sustainable Human Development Foundation; Sigmar Gabriel, Member of the Bundestag, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Germany; Jochen Thewes, CEO, Schenker AG; and Yves Daccord, Director-General, International Committee of the Red Cross.
